Who is God?

I am starting a new series of articles in order to provide evidence and arguments for the existence of God.

But before starting this, I want to answer the questions:

  • Who is God?
  • What are His qualities?
  • Where can we find them in the Bible?

God is the Creator of everything. He is a personal supreme being. He is triune. is all-knowing and all-powerful, his greatness is infinite, he rules over everything, and nothing happens without his permission. God is the source of perfect morality, he is eternal, unchanging, and perfectly just. He always keeps his promises, he can’t lie, he can’t make mistakes, and his understanding is perfect and inscrutable. He is love, his works are perfect, and he is the source of eternal life.

God is the Creator:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1

God’s works are perfect

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

Genesis 1:31

God is the source of eternal life

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

John 1:4

God is all-knowing

Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
his understanding has no limit.

Psalm 147:5

God knows everything, there is nothing that God doesn’t know.

God is infinitely great

“But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!

1 Kings 8:27

Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
his greatness no one can fathom.

Psalm 145:3

God is the ruler of all

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:

“Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.

Revelation 19:6

The Lord is exalted over all the nations,
    his glory above the heavens.
Who is like the Lord our God,
the One who sits enthroned on high,
who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?

Psalms 113:4-6

Who can speak and have it happen
if the Lord has not decreed it?

Lamentations 3:37

God is almighty

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Revelation 1:8

Do you not know?
    Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.

Isaiah 40:28

God has all the power, nothing is impossible to God.

God can’t lie

God is not human, that he should lie,
not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise and not fulfill?

Numbers 23:19

God is unchanging

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Hebrews 13:8

“I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.

The grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of our God endures forever.”

Isaiah 40:8

25 In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
26 They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
Like clothing you will change them
    and they will be discarded.
27 But you remain the same,
and your years will never end

Psalms 102:25-27

God is a perfect judge

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and[a] knowledge of God!
    How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!

Romans 11:33

God is love

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

1 John 4:7-10

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Give thanks to the God of heaven.
His love endures forever.

He is the Rock, his works are perfect,
and all his ways are just.
A faithful God who does no wrong,
    upright and just is he.

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
love and faithfulness go before you.

Psalms 89:14

But the Lord Almighty will be exalted by his justice,
and the holy God will be proved holy by his righteous acts.

Isaiah 5:16

God is personal and triune:

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Genesis 1:26

“Come near me and listen to this:

“From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret;
at the time it happens, I am there.”

And now the Sovereign Lord has sent me,
    endowed with his Spirit.

Isaiah 48:16

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

The Son is God

We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

1 John 5:20

The Holy Spirit is God

Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

Acts 5:3–4

God is one

 I am the Lord, and there is no other;
apart from me there is no God.
I will strengthen you,
though you have not acknowledged me,
so that from the rising of the sun
to the place of its setting
people may know there is none besides me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other.
