Papaia: \u201cYes, please.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cashier: \u201cThen it\u2019s 30 euros and 30 cents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia: \u201cOh\u2026 then no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cashier: \u201cOkay. Cash or card?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia: \u201cWould you mind if I paid with coins?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cashier wrinkles her nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cashier: \u201cYeah, sure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia starts counting his coins. The customers behind him begin looking at their watches, sighing, and shifting impatiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia finally reaches \u20ac29.50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He checks his pockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia: \u201cOh! I\u2019m fifty cents short.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cashier: \u201cDo you want to take something out?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia: \u201cNo, I need everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cashier: \u201cDo you have a banknote? Or you can pay by card.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia searches through his wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia: \u201cOh, here we go!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He pulls out a banknote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s a \u20ac100 bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia: \u201cI only have this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cashier: \u201cDon\u2019t you have a smaller one?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia: \u201cNo, that\u2019s all I have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cashier: \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cashier gives him his coins back. Papaia temporarily puts them on top of the pizza box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cashier: \u201cI\u2019m sorry, but I only have coins for change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia stares at her, dumbfounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cashier gives him \u20ac70 in coins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The entire line behind him lets out a collective sigh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia gathers all the coins and puts them together on top of the pizza box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cashier: \u201cAre you collecting the stickers?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia: \u201cYes, thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cashier counts the stickers and hands them to Papaia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia counts them again, just to make sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia: \u201cExcuse me, how many stickers do I need for the teapot?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cashier: \u201c350.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia checks his card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He has 349.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia: \u201cI\u2019m missing one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cashier: \u201cThen you can get it next time. Or, if you want, there\u2019s the napkin holder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia: \u201cOh, no\u2026 I already have that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Someone in the line groans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cashier: \u201cHave a nice day. Thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under pressure from the people waiting, Papaia turns around and hurries away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But he forgets about the \u20ac70 in coins sitting on top of the pizza box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The coins immediately slide off and scatter all over the floor, rolling between the feet of the customers in line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Papaia finally makes it home, where he meets his wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
